Consultation open on proposed NP and RN prescriber standards and prescribed qualifications
The Nursing Council is seeking feedback on proposed standards of competence for nurse practitioners (NPs) and registered nurse prescribers (RN prescribers).
Alongside this, we are consulting on proposed changes to the prescribed qualifications for the NP and RN prescriber scopes of practice.
The consultation follows earlier work to review the NP and RN prescriber scopes of practice. Following consultation in late 2025, the Nursing Council Board approved a revised nurse practitioner scope of practice and a new registered nurse prescriber scope of practice.
We are now seeking feedback on:
- proposed standards of competence for registered nurse prescribers
- proposed standards of competence for nurse practitioners
- prescribed qualifications for the nurse practitioner scope
- prescribed qualifications for the registered nurse prescriber scope.
The consultation webpage includes consultation documents, supporting literature reviews, international reviews, and information about how to make a submission.
Feedback received through this consultation will help inform the Board's final decisions on the standards of competence and prescribed qualifications.
