Updated EN
and RN scopes of practice and new standards of competence
The Nursing Council has released its updated enrolled and
registered nurse scopes of practice and new standards of competence, which come
into effect on 1 April 2025. These standards, which were developed in consultation with
the sector, will underpin and guide the way in which nurses practise for years
to come. The changes reflect the
increasing and more complex healthcare needs across the motu. They promote safe, competent and professional practice which
is at the heart of the Council’s regulatory role to deliver safe health care
for the people of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The enrolled nurse scope of practice is enabling and recognises the
breadth of EN practice. The registered nurse scope of practice reflects the complexity of practice
and changing healthcare demands. Both scopes are aligned and designed to meet
current and future nursing challenges.
The standards
of competence are intended to enable every nurse to apply them in their
practice. It is important for all nurses to familiarise themselves with the new
standards as these will be the basis for practice.
Education
standards have also been updated to align with the scopes and are being
implemented.
